SEAMEO-World Bank Project on Mother Tongue, Phase 2

Enhancing Awareness and Building the Capacity of SEAMEO in Establishing Mother Tongue-based Multilingual Education (MLE) Programmes

End of Project Conference

On 24 February 2011 SEAMEO Secretariat in collaboration with World Bank conducted End of Project Conference at the Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand which marks the end of  SEAMEO-World Bank Project on Mother Tongue, Phase 2. The Conference aims to report to the World Bank on the accomplishments, lessons learned and key insights from the implementation of the Project throughout the last one year. During the conference there were discussions on potential areas of follow-up and further collaboration between SEAMEO and the World Bank on multilingual education and other issues that relate to helping achieve the Education for All Goals in Southeast Asia.

 

This conference was participated not only by officials of SEAMEO Secretariat and World Bank but also MLE Fellows consisting of the representatives of Ministry of Education of Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, SEAMEO INNOTECH, SEAMEO SPAFA, and SEAMEO QITEP in Language.

The participants shared their insights and views on MTB MLE programmes that  workshops and roles of NGOs were needed. Moreover, support from Government and society, platform, training, study visit, systematic research, cooperation were also required for further activities. Besides insight sharing, there were presentations of proposals by some representatives of Ministries and SEAMEO Centres. In regard to this, SEAMEO QITEP in Language presented its proposal on Developing and Using Advocacy Materials for Community Mobilisation, which is one of the ways to further advocate MTB MLE programmes in Indonesia. The targeted areas are in West Java, Yogyakarta, South Sulawesi and West Nusa Tenggara. The activities are the continuation of the previous workshops conducted in the four provinces in 2010.
